BOSS MEETING
——————————————————
Langston
FOR THE LIFE OF ME, I couldn’t stop thinking about watching Ben fucking Luci in his office only two days ago.
Sure, I’d enjoyed it immensely; however, there had been something distinctly possessive that took root as I watched the scene. Probably a good thing I’d been in another building at the time.
Now it was a few minutes after six and I was walking into the restaurant I’d agreed to meet my partners in. Not only did the four of us work together, we were also close friends. Had been for a long time and these dinners were generally our time to relax without the weight of work on us. I usually looked forward to these days, only I wasn’t sure relaxed was going to be the atmosphere surrounding us tonight. Considering everything that was taking place in the office, tensions were running a little high. Mine especially.
“I ordered you a drink,” my brother informed me when I joined the three of them at a table in the back of the restaurant.
“Thanks.” I took my seat. “That call lasted longer than I’d expected.”
“Who was it?” Justin inquired, clearly trying to make small talk.
“One of my managers is attempting to onboard an author who’s currently riding quite the high from her recent success.”
Landon smiled knowingly. “Tough sell, huh?”
That seemed to be the case these days. With the rise of self-publishing, independent authors were making big waves and their success was great. As with the traditional publishers, publicists were having to go the distance in proving that they still had a lot to offer. We were no exception. However, we did have a lot to offer. For those who wanted to get their names out past Facebook, it required an industry professional who knew something about reaching readers. That was my life.
The waitress delivered our drinks and I grabbed the glass and took a sip. “I’d prefer not to discuss it.”
I tried not to take work home with me. I worked a lot of hours as it was. Although I didn’t necessarily arrive at the office at the ass-crack of dawn, I did work late into the evenings, most of the time on conference calls or looking over presentations.
Not that I was complaining. Business was good and the money was great, so I had nothing to bitch about.
“How’d Luci seem to you today?” Landon asked me directly.
I gave a brief shrug. “I didn’t see much of her. Why?”
He shrugged also.
Ben grinned. “She seemed far less…frustrated than she did on Tuesday. I think we did a number on her.”
I grinned as I took another sip of my scotch. We’d purposely worked Luci into a frenzy on Tuesday, and apparently, we’d achieved our goal. It hadn’t been with cruel intentions, mind you. We simply wanted to see how far we could push her before she snapped. I was happy to say the woman had far more patience than most people.
“I’m just glad you took the edge off,” Justin said to Ben, leaning back in his chair.
